Denver Broncos receiver Tim Patrick looks to have sustained a season-ending injury in training camp for the second straight year.
Patrick is believed to have suffered an Achilles rupture during Broncos practice on Monday, ESPN reported, effectively ending his 2023 season.
Patrick was already attempting a comeback after suffering an ACL tear in his right knee.
Patrick’s new injury comes two days ahead of the one-year mark from when he suffered the ACL tear.
“I was watching it directly. He was running a route. It was something we had corrected earlier, on air, planted, thought it looked like he slipped,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said after practice.
“It wasn’t any contact. It was just coming out of a cut.”
Patrick, entering his sixth season with the Broncos, has yet to play on his three-year, $34.5 million extension he signed with the franchise in Oct. 2021.
Patrick was undrafted out of Utah, but he became a revelation during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, in which he tallied more than 700 yards receiving each year and had 11 total touchdowns.
“It’s always difficult, especially a guy like that who’s a leader, who’s coming off a year of rehabilitation,” Payton said. “So, it’s difficult for his teammates – all of us.”
The Broncos also plan to waive receiver KJ Hamler with a non-football illness designed after he has diagnosed with a mild heart irritation, he revealed on social media.
